Trump says he kept classified folders as ‘cool’ keepsakes but not the papers

Former President Donald Trump claimed Wednesday that he didn’t take classified documents to Mar-a-Lago — but only retained the folders the papers came in as a “‘cool’ keepsake.”

Trump, 76, argued on his Truth Social media platform that the “Fake News Media & Crooked Democrats” continue to claim that he had a “large number of documents” at the Florida resort to lessen the severity of the revelations about sensitive documents at President Biden’s Delaware home and his Penn Biden Center think tank office in Washington.

“When I was in the Oval Office, or elsewhere, & ‘papers’ were distributed to groups of people & me, they would often be in a striped paper folder with ‘Classified’ or ‘Confidential’ or another word on them,” the former president attempted to explain. “When the session was over, they would collect the paper(s), but not the folders, & I saved hundreds of them.”

He referred to the folders as “ordinary” and “inexpensive” but said “they were a ‘cool’ keepsake.”

The 45th president suggested that the FBI — which he referred to as “the Gestapo” — took some of the folders to Mar-a-Lago and counted them as documents.

”It’s also possible that the Trump Hating Marxist Thugs in charge will ‘plant’ documents while they’re in possession of the material. As President, and based on the Presidential Records Act & Socks Case, I did NOTHING WRONG. JOE DID!” he continued, proclaiming his innocence in all-caps.

Trump also questioned why Biden is being treated “so much better than me” in the investigations involving the classified documents. “I’m shocked (not really!),” he said.

Trump went on to ask why federal agents aren’t raiding Biden’s home, as the FBI did at Mar-a-Lago last Aug. 8

He also referred to reports that the Justice Department decided against having FBI agents monitor a search for documents by Biden’s lawyers because the attorneys were considered to be cooperating with the investigation.

“[H]ow come his representatives and lawyers are allowed to work together with the Gestopo (sp) in looking for documents, when my lawyers & representatives were not allowed anywhere near the search. We weren’t even allowed to know what they took when they raided my home,” Trump said.

Biden’s lawyers found Obama-era classified documents in the closet of an office Biden used at the Penn Biden Center on Nov. 2, 2022, and said they alerted the Justice Department to the find.

The White House then confirmed last week that documents were also found in subsequent searches of the president’s Delaware home, including in the garage where Biden stores his vintage 1967 Corvette.

The FBI retrieved 27 boxes of materials from Mar-a-Lago — including documents marked “Top Secret,” “TS/SCI” or Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information,” “Secret” and “Confidential.”

The Mar-a-Lago raid followed months of negotiations between Trump’s lawyers and the National Archives and Records Administration, which preserves presidential papers.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has named special counsels to investigate both Biden and Trump’s handling of classified documents.
