Police evacuated part of Newark Airport and delayed scores of flights Sunday amid “reports of a suspicious package” on the 21st anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, Port Authority officials said.
Cops “immediately” cleared out Terminal C’s lower level “as a precautionary measure” upon learning of the package around 12:45 p.m., officials said.
The floor reopened at 1:45 p.m., but FAA officials did not allow flights to resume arriving at the airport until after 2:30 p.m. The disruption resulted in at least 59 flight delays, officials said.
Nervous flyers took to social media to express confusion about what was happening.
“America is being stuck in newark airport on the most tragic day in our recent history in lockdown with no information being given to scared travelers,” one frustrated flyer posted on Twitter.
Another traveler said she felt “trapped.
“Anyone know what’s going on a Newark Airport [that’s] causing a security lock down essentially leaving all of us in Terminal C Levels 1 & 2 to be trapped [and] missing flights?,” the user, Sloopyy, tweeted.
